In this recording John Mahan (b. 1923) discusses his family history in Helena, Missoula, and Bozeman, Montana; his experiences serving in the Marine Corps during World War II; attending law school following the war on the GI bill; returning to Helena to establish a law career; working with well known lawyers like Wellington Rankin and Lester Lobel in his capacity as city attorney; his work as post commander in Helena for VFW and election as National Commander in 1958; his efforts to get more support for the facilities at Fort Harrison including building the current hospital; taking job in Washington D.C. with Subversive Activities Control Board in 1965 to investigate and reveal subversive activities in U.S.; going to work for the Veterans Administration to help get it established; returning to Montana in 1977 and returning to private legal practice; and various murder cases he worked on in Helena over the past 20 years.
